The world standard Wood Packaging Phytosanitary Measures (FAO ISPM No. 15) was introduced in March 2002, to end global trade barriers as a result of the jumble of import restrictions on wood packaging. These restrictions by various countries for fear of the riding of live pests (such as the OWN and the Asian Longhorned Beetle) on wooden packaging during transport, which has occurred in the past several times. The world standard approved measures are there to prevent this risk.
Under the ISPM No. 15 are recognized :
- Heat treatment of wooden packaging for at least 30 minutes at a temperature of 56 degrees Celsius in the heart of the wood.
- In addition, the standard recommends using debarked wood.
